AN OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE
It is a month that I took over as the Principal of University
College Mangalore. It is my good fortune that I am given an opportunity to
repay a part of the debt that I owe to my institution. The doors of
opportunity to people from all sections of society remains open in University College. It is one of the few places in this country which
belongs to people of all sections of the society.
I feel that our duty is prayer and the place of work is temple. Unless we are committed to this principle rest of what we preach is a sheer waste.Teaching fraternity in higher education is paid well or very well today. Thanks to UGC. I was the Secretary of Association of Mangalore University College Teachers (AMUCT), when the first pay scale was introduced. All of us thought that higher pay would make teachers more serious and dedicated. It is very sad that this has not happened. There is nothing wrong if people feel that teaching community has not really grown intellectually, neither remained sensitive on the burning issues in society. To great extent it is because the pay package did attract non-academicians to the profession in large numbers. Pay and privilege has encouraged many like me,to take teaching and research work seriously, which has opened a new world.
I am glad that my institution banks on my shoulders whenever there is higher burden of responsibility. Convener of RUSA, Coordinatorship of NAAC, Founder Coordinator of MBA(IB), M.Com(E), whatever. When everybody brushed it away, I embraced because it was required for my INSTITUTION. In fact such an attitude paid me richly : as I was put to test many times about my capability, competency and leadership. After series of jerks, the decision came through and I took over as the Principal. My colleagues did extend their full support. There are always exceptions but one should not get stuck there.
There is lot of work to be done My friends complain that I am always on high speed mode which others find it difficult to follow. I do agree but god work needs to be done at the earliest. It is my aim to put the College on fast track. let me try...
