MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
4th of September 2010, Saturday was a not just another day in my life. It was ‘The Day’, our University College was re-accredited with A Grade, something that brought me immense happiness. The way our Hon. Vice-Chancellor spoke about the news and the way in which he celebrated the good news with all those for whom ‘The College’ matters was something that I just can not forget in my life; Hats off to you Sir.
As convener of the NAAC Steering Committee, I had a very tough time. I wanted to do it for my institution, which is an icon of social justice in this region. It has given life to thousands of people. For me personally it is one of the most sacred places in the town. Prof H.R. Laxminarayan Bhat, the principal of the College had so much faith in me and made me realize my potential.
In handling all tough assignments in my life I had the support of my best half. Her illness during September 2009, put me down for a while, and I had to be attending to her needs as well. MBA(IB) was started in the college and I was made the Coordinator. It was a real bed of thorns. It cost me my time, money and much more. I had lot of people to sympathize, but it does not help you know. I knew it well that, once you are a looser, no body wants you. Some times I had to walk alone, not even my shadow followed me. Sometimes, those who make you feel close to you, drop you down politely and walk away, at testing times. I have experienced it many times. Experiences like the above educated me well and taught me precious lessons that made me what I am today. The up hill task was over and the report was finally submitted in Jan, 16th 2010.
After submission of report we had to fine tune everything that we laid claim to in the NAAC report. This called for the support of the University and the co-operation of the staff. There was a vacum; one VC retired and the other had to assume office. Uncertainty looming large, I was tensed about loosing an invitation by the “Institute of Economic Sciences Belgrade” to be a part of the International Conference on Entrepreneurship and discuss a Joint Project to be carried on in India and Belgrade. I wanted to manage both; the PEER team visit and my visit to Belgrade. But finally I had to give up my Belgrade visit. Suddenly I was thrust with another responsibility of managing a stage function of a religious ceremony connected to renovation of Basadi (jain temple) in my native place. This is something which involved lot of local politics and other issues. But I could not brush this aside as it was the wish of many elders from native pace, who coloured my imaginations during child hood. So during second week of April in College NAAC preparation was going on in full swing, and every evening I had to drive to and fro very evening (my native place) Irvathur (55KMs) and Mangalore. This went on for about a week, which I managed by pulling all my nerves.
When we met the new Vice-Chancellor on the 4th April 2010, I was really impressed by his gesture. Later, Principal and I invited him to the college. He felt that we have not done our home work properly but instructed us as to how we should prepare for a take off. Things started moving fast, library got computers, the college buildings got a new look with the painting of walls and doors. Vice-Chancellor said he would like to visit each department and would like to see the preparations with the Registrar. This was some thing unheard of for the staff in the college, as no Vice-Chancellor visited all the departments in the college. This gesture of paying visit and meeting staff, did the magic. On the specified date our Vice-Chancellor Prof. T.C. Shivashankara Murthy and Registrar Chinnappa Gowda visited each department, gave instructions, and motivated the staff, with a instruction that after the preparations he would do a mock visit (like that o f NAAC Peer Team). ‘Our VC is very particular about the visit and we must do everything possible’ leave no stone unturned, awake, arise and stop not till the work is completed’ was the attitude of every one in the college. I am convinced that we have a Vice-Chancellor with a difference. I wish our University scales new heights under his dynamic leadership. He has dreams and a vision, and the art of making things happen.
The whole exercise helped me to know my collegeous, college and students better. I am really dumb struck by the love and affection showered on me by my fellow teachers, students and the non-teaching staff. No one said no to anything that I asked for. Every body made me learn lot of things. I really treasure it for the rest of my life.
In July I had an invitation to visit HAN University Arnhem near Amsterdam in Netherlands. The convener of the conference writes me that she found my paper quite interesting and got a lead to write a paper. I feel it is really gratifying.
I owe all my progress to my Amma and Appa, my dear Raji and Appu who allowed me to do all this. It is great to have such a warm, and caring family.
Still.
The woods are lovely dark and deep
Many a promises I have to Keep and miles to go before I sleep
